Title: Arctic carbon and freshwater fluxes in a time of change

Description

Dr. Amon is currently a Professor in the Department of Marine and Coastal Environmental Science in the College of Marine Sciences and Maritime Studies and in the Department of Oceanography at Texas A&M University. He received his MS in Marine Biology from the University of Vienna in Austria and his Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of Texas at Austin. After finishing his Ph.D., Dr. Amon worked as a research scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Germany before beginning his tenure at Texas A&M University. Dr. Amon’s research has focused on the Arctic region for the last 30 years, generally working on carbon biogeochemistry in the Arctic Ocean and large Siberian watersheds. Over the last 10 years Dr. Amon was also part of a large international project in the Gulf of Mexico to study deep water exchanges with the North Atlantic. Dr. Amon has extensive experience with international research collaborations, particularly with Russian, European and Mexican colleagues, during which he organized and participated in numerous field campaigns, including a 2024 expedition to the central Arctic Ocean. Before returning to his University duties in July 2024, Dr. Amon served 3 years as a program director in the Office of Polar Programs for the US-National Science Foundation.
