Description
Can Seaweed Farming Contribute to a New Sustainable Economy in Texas?
Date: April 3, 2025
Time: 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM
Location: Patton Center, Marine Science Institute, University of Texas at Austin, Port Aransas
Event Overview:
Since the legalization of mariculture in Texas in 2020, the state has seen the rapid development of an oyster mariculture industry. This raises an important question: What forms of economically viable, environmentally sound mariculture can thrive on the Texas coast? This symposium will focus on assessing the potential of seaweed (macroalgae) farming as a key contributor to a sustainable economy in Texas.
Goal of the Symposium:
This event aims to explore the opportunities and challenges of seaweed farming, a rapidly emerging industry with diverse potential applications. We will discuss how seaweed cultivation can contribute to the state’s economic growth while addressing environmental and technological concerns.
The symposium will explore a variety of topics, including strategies and opportunities for seaweed cultivation and harvesting, as well as its use in human food, medical, and cosmetic products. Discussions will also cover the application of seaweed in terrestrial agriculture and bioremediation, and the potential for establishing renewable biofuel and bioplastic industries based on seaweed. Additionally, the event will examine the co-cultivation of seaweed with other species, such as bivalves, crustaceans, and finfish, in commercial mariculture operations, as well as the integration of seaweed mariculture into traditional industries, including oil and gas.
Techno-economic analyses of seaweed-related target markets symposium will feature invited talks, plenary sessions, and breakout group discussions. At the conclusion, a white paper summarizing the discussions and outcomes will be circulated among participants.
Who Should Attend:
This event is aimed at researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders interested in exploring the potential of seaweed farming to contribute to Texas' sustainable economy.
Join us for an in-depth exploration of how this innovative industry can reshape the future of mariculture and sustainability in Texas.
