Interested in studying coastal ecosystems through hands-on field research? The University of Texas Marine Science Institute is now accepting applications for the 2027 Marine Botany Field Research Experience, a three-week study abroad program in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico for May 9-27, 2029. Students will explore mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and coastal lagoons while conducting independent research alongside UT faculty members Ken Dunton and Sharon Herzka.

The course takes place in Celestún and Isla Arena, home to the Ría Celestún and Los Petenes Biosphere Reserves, regions known for their rich biodiversity and unique coastal environments. Students will gain firsthand experience collecting field data, studying ecosystem processes, and examining how human activities and environmental change affect coastal systems. Research conducted during the course helps support broader conservation and management efforts in the region.
